While we all know about the dangers of alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, did you know that you could become addicted to your favourite food?

From withdrawal symptoms to changes in brain chemistry, our snacks have surprising ways of keeping us wanting more.
Here is our guide to five of the world’s most addictive foods.

Chocolate

Many people claim to be chocoholics, but can you really be addicted to chocolate?
The answer is… perhaps. One reason many people feel “addicted” to chocolate is that the food’s chemical compounds (including theobromine, phenyethylamine, anandamide and tryptophan)

actually have pleasure-inducing effects that can mimic the effects of drugs on the brain.
Chocolate also contains alkaloids (tetrahydro-beta-carbolines) which are present in alcohol and have been linked to alcoholism.

However – before you go booking yourself into Chocoholics Anonymous – it is important to note that many researchers have pointed out that the chemicals in chocolate also exist in other foods which most of us do not crave. It has also been suggested that the chemicals in chocolate are not in high enough doses to lead to addiction. Regardless, it is impossible to deny that chocolate is one of the world’s most-craved foods – whether this is due to psychological reasons or a physical addiction.

Cheese

From pizzas to cheeseburgers, cheese is a staple of many widely-craved junk foods, but there could be more to our cravings than we think.

Various studies have discovered the presence of opiates –
including the highly addictive morphine – in the popular dairy product.

While the amounts of morphine in cheese are very small and probably not enough to cause addiction, some researchers have expressed concern about its levels of casein (the main protein in cheese) which produces morphine-like opiate compounds called casomorphins during digestion.

On top of this, cheese also contains phenylethylamine, a substance with stimulant effects which is thought to give consumers a natural “high”, and which is reputed to have addictive qualities.

Sugar

We all know that sugar is bad for our health but, according to numerous studies, it can also be addictive. Studies have suggested that when we eat sugar, chemicals called opioids are released by the brain, which leads to an intense feeling of pleasure.

It is this feeling that people may crave in the absence of sugar.

A study by psychologists at Princeton University investigated sugar addiction by studying its effect on rats.
They discovered that after rats were fed a diet high in sugar, they experienced symptoms similar to those produced by drug withdrawal when the sugar was withdrawn, including shaking and changes in brain chemistry.

The study therefore concluded what other researchers have also suggested; that it is possible to become severely dependent on sugar.

Burgers and other processed meat

Numerous researchers and studies have suggested that fatty, processed junk food such as burgers may actually be addictive. According to Professor David Kessler – an ex-commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration and author of The End of Overeating – the combination of fat, salt and sugar in junk food triggers our “bliss point” and leaves us wanting more.

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in Florida backed up this theory with a study which found that the addictive responses in the brains of rats when fed junk food including fatty meats were the same as in those that consume cocaine or heroin. On top of this, meat – like chocolate, cheese and sugar – releases opiate-like substances during digestion which some studies have suggested

can leave us craving more.

Coffee

Many feel that they can’t start the day without a cup of coffee and people often joke about having a caffeine “addiction”, however this may not be far from the truth.
Although there has been much debate over the years about whether or not caffeine is genuinely addictive,

it is difficult to deny that many of us crave it to the point where we feel we can’t function without it.

One reason that people may crave caffeine so much is due to the fairly severe symptoms of caffeine withdrawal that people often face, ranging from fatigue and headaches to irritability and depression.

However, it may be that, rather than being physically dependent on caffeine, you are actually addicted to the belief that you can’t function without your morning cup of coffee.
Whatever the reason, caffeine remains the world’s most popular drug and a staple of many daily routines.

As we all become health conscious, we realize the importance of

strict and regular physical activity. But do we know all the

benefits of exercise?

1. The elixir to long life! According to an age old study, exercise

reduces the chance of premature death.

2. Help you have a lovely heart! Exercise strengthens the

cardiovascular muscles and enhances blood circulation. Cholesterol

is checked by the burning of those extra calories and blood

pressure is regulated.  Aerobic exercises are seen to benefit

hypertensive individuals and the diabetics.

3. Makes you brainy! It promotes brain health by stimulating the

formation of new brain cells thereby aiding memory and cognition.

Those exercise have a remote chance of suffering from hemorrhage

and stroke. If you have a family history of alzheimers then make it

a point to sweat out and let your brain produce those chemicals

that prevent Alzheimers causing inflammation.

4. On the move for flexibility! Obesity and weight gain can be

solved only with regular exercise. The more intense the exercise

the more are the calories burnt.

5. For the smile! Exercise also helps to life your mental health,

thwart depression and keep stress at bay. It might sound ironical

that exercise would rid of fatigue by boosting energy.

6. Pain for pain. Being active would reduce joint pains and

injuries, and help with arthritis. Weight bearing exercises improve

bone strength and prevent bone loss.

7. For a great night! It not only soothes you in to a sound sleep

but also energies you for a better sex life.

8. Last not the least, you will gain remarkable self esteem with a

well toned body.

It is recommended that you get at least 30 minutes of physical

activity in some form everyday irrespective of your age and gender.

But, just keep in mind that  however hard you exercise you should

be able to carry on a conversation without panting.

Wishing you good health,

 Secrets For a Flat Stomach
Developing a lean, flat stomach takes time and patience, especially when it comes to those last few kilograms in those hard to lose places. There is only one way to lose fat in the so-called ‘stubborn areas,’ and that is with the correct combination strength training (with a extra focus on mid-section), cardiovascular exercise (short, hard workouts), and stable blood sugar (keeps you from adding additional fat and makes it easier for the body to use body fat for fuel).

Spot Reduction is a Myth – The first thing you need to realize is that it is impossible to ‘spot reduce’ fat from one specific part of the body. Fat loss occurs systemically, meaning that you can’t control where the fat comes from. When you burn fat for energy, you will draw it from all areas of the body, and the first place you tend to put it on will be the last place it comes off.

Cardio, cardio, cardio – Doing all the abs exercises in the world will do nothing if you have a layer of fat covering it. Doing strength training, or lifting weights, would help, but not as much as aerobic exercise. If you want to add some ab exercises in after the cardio, that’s great, but be sure to work your whole torso, not just the upper abs — that includes the lower abs, lower back and the muscles that wrap around your sides.

For example, Walking, jogging, bicycling, elliptical exercise and stair climbing are all great fat burners. Most give up early in the workout. During the first 10 minutes of aerobic activity, glycogen (stored carbohydrates) is the primary fuel source. Because you don’t burn significant amounts of fat until glycogen stores are depleted, the key to maximum fat loss is to work out aerobically for 30-60 minutes continuously per session.

Diet – Its best to stay away from fried food and too many sugary desserts. Abdominal fat loss is a 50% exercise, 50% nutrition combination. Regardless of how much you workout, if the number of calories you take in is greater than the amount you burn, you’ll still put on abdominal fat.

Eat Small Meals Regularly – You should try and spread your calories out into five small meals a day instead of 2 or 3 big ones so that you don’t overeat in one feeding.

Give it Time – If you want to have a flat stomach in 3 weeks, forget it. Losing fat takes time, and it’s unhealthy to lose too much weight too fast. Gradual weight loss is healthier, and more likely to be sustained over time. Go for a lifestyle change, something you can live with for the rest of your life, or you will just yo-yo. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

You can now help a friend in need by letting him/her know that lemon juice is beneficial in preventing the disease. Its taste is pleasant and it does not produce the horrific effects of chemotherapy. How many people will die while this closely guarded secret is kept, so as not to jeopardize the beneficial multimillionaires large corporations? As you know, the lemon tree is known for its varieties of lemons and limes. You can eat the fruit in different ways: you can eat the pulp, juice press, prepare drinks, sorbets, pastries, etc… It is credited with many virtues, but the most interesting is the effect it produces on cysts and tumors. This plant is a proven remedy against cancers of all types. Some say it is very useful in all variants of cancer. It is considered also as an anti microbial spectrum against bacterial infections and fungi, effective against internal parasites and worms, it regulates blood pressure which is too high and an antidepressant, combats stress and nervous disorders.
The source of this information is fascinating: it comes from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world, says that after more than 20 laboratory tests since 1970, the extracts revealed that: It destroys the malignant cells in 12 cancers, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreas … The compounds of this tree showed 10,000 times better than the product Adriamycin, a drug normally used chemotherapeutic in the world, slowing the growth of cancer cells. And what is even more astonishing: this type of therapy with lemon extract only destroys malignant cancer cells and it does not affect healthy cells.
